Oh, Elan, you've really done it this time. It won't be long before a portion of one of my paychecks goes towards a pair of these bad boys. The Ripstick Black Edition is the product of what happens when a ski company makes a great pair of skis (the regular Ripsticks), and listens to their customers to make an even better version (the Black Edition). With enough carbon to charge these puppies down an icy black diamond at Eldora, the Black Edition also maintains light enough of a weight for me to land my first 360 on. The Elan Ripstick Black Edition 102 is the heavy hitter of the family, built for the rider who treats the entire mountain like a big-mountain freeride venue. While the standard 102 is a floaty favorite, the Black Edition adds significant carbon-powered dampening to handle the high-inertia forces of deep turns and high-speed runouts. That extra rigidity works wonders here by preventing the ski from folding when you're punching through chunky debris or landing in tracked-out powder. It maintains the integral rocker design that makes the Ripstick so famously nimble, but the reinforced carbon frame acts as a stabilizer, smoothing out the vibrations that usually fatigue a rider's legs. If you want a wide-platform ski that can surf the deep stuff but has the torsional backbone to hammer a turn on a hardpack traverse, the 102 BE is the definitive choice.
