Turns out Patagonia founder Yvon Chouinard didn't get his start developing breathable waterproof membranes. Rather, the company's origin story follows a young Chouinard as he learns blacksmithing to develop rock climbing gear, sells English rugby shirts to aspiring climbers, tests the first synthetic material for mountaineering, and reimagines clothing layers in outdoor recreation.
