Helly Hansen

Brand Spotlight: Helly Hansen

Helly Hansen holds the title as maybe the most common brand seen on working ski patrollers on slopes everywhere. That should be enough to tell you about the kind of gear they like to make. With a long history in making garments for sailors working in nasty conditions, Helly Hansen knows how to create extremely high performance pieces for the worst weather conditions you can find.

Instead of relying on other companies to produce waterproof membranes or breathable fabrics, Helly Hansen committed to create their own. Helly Tech offers high level waterproofing performance in the worst conditions, and their Lifa fabric was one of the world's first breathable fabrics to be used in technical base layers as an alternative to wool. You'll also find insulated ski gear with their Lifaloft series. Partnering with Primaloft insulation and combining it with the Lifa fabric construction, they can build insulated pieces that are both lighter and warmer than your typical insulated ski jacket.

Helly Hansen offers a wide selection of ski equipment. From insulated resort pieces to backcountry freeride kits, there's something for everyone and how they explore their mountains. Check out their shells for lightweight and more versatile use, and insulated pieces for bomber gear in the coldest, windiest, wettest, and gnarliest of weather.

More about Helly Hansen

Fit
Helly Hansen generally runs true to size. Generally, their fit is more freeride oriented with a boxier shape than more tailored jackets and pants. Check out Helly Hansen's size chart for more information.

Sustainability
Helly Hansen has an extensive approach to sustainability. They prioritize making durable gear that will last you years, reducing the amount of harmful chemicals in DWRs and the manufacturing process, and increasing the amount of recycled material in their products. Helly Hansen recently introduced new technology with their Lifa Infinity Pro. Using their Lifa fiber construction, these garments require no chemicals to provide fully waterproof and breathable performance. Read more about Helly Hansen's sustainability steps here.

History
With a heritage running back to 1870, Helly Hansen knows a thing or two about how to make durable and high performance gear for inclement weather. Norwegian captain Helly Juell Hansen was tired of seeing his sailors getting hammered by the weather. He started applying oil to cotton canvases to create a waterproof material that was still supple enough to move around and work in. Partnering up with his wife Margarethe, they continued to develop different products and Helly Hansen pioneered new kinds of technical equipment.
