My take on bindings is that if you don't think about them, then they are doing their job perfectly. I can easily say that I rarely think about my ATK Raider 13 Evo, other than to marvel at how little I think about them. They're easy to step into (at least for a tech binding), with the new design transitions are seamless, they are light on the feet, and they ski as well as I can expect a touring binding to (don't worry, I have high standards). If you're looking for a little better downhill performance, you can add a freeride space which gives a little more contact on the heel, but if you're looking to cut ounces I've found they ski pretty well without it, too. All in all, they're my favorite piece of equipment that takes up very little space in my brain which is needed since I spend most of my time thinking about boots and skis.

The ATK Raider 13 EVO is part of a new generation of hardcore freeride oriented bindings and is quite likely the best of them (barring its sibling, the Freeraider 15). It handles the uphill like any other binding in this weight class, while being feature rich and relatively easy to use. It handles the downhill very well for a tech binding, from fair performance on groomers and chopped powder, to excellent performance in tight trees and powder. With its adjustable release settings and elastic travel, it can handle drops and jumps better than I expected any non-hybrid touring binding to be capable of. In short, this is the best all-around free touring binding that you can get. This binding is for people who are going to be skiing aggressively in the backcountry, but will be doing too much vert, or going too often to justify having a heavier hybrid binding. I think this binding pairs best with a semi-light touring ski, such as the Corvus Freebird or the Bent 110. On an ultralight ski, the entire combination ends up feeling light and untrustworthy (looking at you, Pagoda Tour), and on a heavier ski, the binding becomes pointless and probably won’t have the juice to really drive the ski. All in all, this is an awesome binding, and will be on the shortlist for my next touring binding purchase.

Our Take:

The mad skiing scientists in Italy ring in a new evolution of lightweight tech bindings this year with the development of the ATK Raider 13 EVO. Building upon the shop favorite ATK Raider, the EVO edition adds two key new features: an automatic brake retention system and a new toe piece with an adjustable release value. Replacing the manual push button system on the OG Raider, the Raider EVO heel piece pulls back the brakes by rotating the heel tower and stepping on the brake pad when you're ready to travel uphill. Rotating the heel tower forward with the pins towards the boots will lower the brakes automatically. This further simplifies transitions, making the already easy-to-use Raider even faster and more straightforward. A redesigned toe piece increases elasticity and suspension. As the toe piece matches the retention of the heel piece, you get unmatched stability for the weight. Combined with ATK's Easy Entry System, magnetic heel flaps, and Snow Pack Proof toe piece from previous years, the ATK Raider 13 EVO is one of the most uncomplicated and easy-to-use tech bindings in the ski industry today. For folks who want to worry about nothing but skiing while traveling in the backcountry, the Raider 13 EVO is an invaluable addition or upgrade to your quiver.
