The Volkl Blaze 104 is an excellent alternative to their heavy metal chargers in the Mantra series, and the punk rock alternative kids in the Revolt series. The Blaze charges forward as its own category of all-mountain freeride, with a focus on skiability. We think the Volkl Blaze 104 is a versatile all-mountain/freeride ski that feels easy to flick around, carves well, and has unique liveliness and energy. All in all, it's a ski that's not going to beat you up and tackles the variety of conditions and terrain we find around the mountain. Gaining a couple hundred grams and new TPU inserts to dampen the ride, the new Blaze tracks better through tough snow conditions and holds up to resort obstacles (read: rocks and stumps and core shot givers) better. The Blaze 104 also features Volkl's new sidecut design with 4 Radius Drive. The tip's sidecut is tweaked to give you better predictability and better grip when locked into the snow but still releases and links into your next turn smoothly. The rockered, but still directional shape and low swing weight means this ski can flick and turn quickly but still holds a solid edge when conditions are firm or if you're cranking up the speed. If you like the sound of a Mantra but don't want that much work, and the Revolt series sounds a little too playful and pivot-y, the Blaze 104 is a perfect happy medium that we think a lot more skiers should get on.
