After breaking into backcountry skiing with a frame touring binding (the Marker Tour F12), the Kingpin quickly rose to the top of my list when I decided to lighten my load with a tech setup. My rationale: Kingpin+tech boot would be exponentially lighter than my previous setup, so going even lighter at the risk of compromising some downhill performance would be unnecessary. I prefer skiing hard to obsessing over grams.

After two seasons of touring on the Kingpin in Vermont, New York, and Colorado, I can pat myself (or, rather, Marker) on the back. On the climb, I personally don't notice much extra weight on my feet over a lighter tech binding, especially if the Kingpin is paired with a light-ish ski, and on the down, the bindings earn their name. The alpine-style heel piece makes transitioning and clicking-in relatively easy, and the added burliness helps them hold up to aggressive skiing, even on harder snow. It's arguably the most versatile tech binding on the market because it crushes the backcountry and can also handle most resort skiing. I wouldn't pound hard bumps on the Kingpin, but who wants to do that when you can chase backcountry pow turns like royalty?

Our Take:

The Marker Kingpin 13 offers a groundbreaking combination of power and durability with a light functional weight, making it an ideal choice for adventurous skiers who seek the downhill feel of a frame AT binding but the smooth uphill performance of a tech binding. The Marker Kingpin 13 has been upgraded with Marker's new Intuitive Step In toe piece. The ISI toe features a larger rubber stop pad to get your boot tip aligned for step in, less pressure required to snap your boot into place, and a wider platform for an enlarged contact area. Easy to step into even in treacherous conditions, the Kingpin also transitions from ski mode to hike mode with the flip of a switch, delivering an ease-of-use not often found among its peers. But the real innovation is marrying the low-profile tech toepiece with a freeride-style heel, which helped earn it the title of first DIN-certified tech binding. As a result, the untracked lines of the backcountry are now more accessible than ever before. Happy hunting.
