This Ski Is A Staff Favorite:

Powder7 Staff Pick Mason P
By: Mason P
This season I finally decided it was time to get a dedicated touring set up, and I am so happy I landed on the Navis. At 5' 10" the 179cm length has proved to be easy to throw around, and surprisingly stable at speed. At 102 underfoot, this is obviously far from a powder ski, but it handles deep snow remarkably well due to the 138mm shovel tips.
Living in the front range, snow conditions can be very variable. I've skied these in everything from sastrugi to wind affected punch crust to 2 feet of fresh pow, and I have yet to find conditions these can't handle.

Now let's not forget about the first part of ski touring: going up hill. These won't leave you with tired legs at the top of your line. At 3200 grams, I still have plenty of leg to ski the steeps after hiking for miles with these on my feet. Black Crow created a real solid ski for every back country skier from beginners to experts.

Our Take:

You might be looking at the most versatile alpine touring ski we've got in the shop. That's why the Black Crows Navis Freebird has quickly become a favorite in the backcountry, from Chamonix to Stowe. As a touring rig, the Navis Freebird is light enough to climb skin tracks all day, whether for multiple laps or on one long tour...especially if you pair it with a light boot and minimalist binding. It's also beefy enough to make your descent worth the climb. Those downhill chops also make the Navis Freebird worthy of a hybrid touring binding, like the Salomon Shift or Marker Duke PT. While we do not recommend that many skiers run them in-bounds as their only ski for both resort and backcountry (we pretty much shy away from recommending any backcountry ski for that), the Navis Freebird can handle all your touring needs. One of our staffers hunted steep and skinny couloirs in Patagonia on them a few years back. Another used them to mine local low-angle powder stashes along Colorado's I-70 corridor for her first season touring. And dozens of mountain folks happily click into them to skin up resort corduroy under the light of a headlamp. What makes the Navis Freebird so versatile is that each of its specs strikes a balance. Abundant camber underfoot and directional tails make for reliable edge hold when you need it most. Lightweight and rockered tips float up in powder and track smoothly rather than hooking. Reinforcement plates and carbon hold up to mixed snow, while lightweight paulownia wood keeps weight down. After all, balance is everything, in skis and in life.

Features:

  • - Progressive front and tail rocker
  • - Classic long camber
  • - Paulownia/Poplar Core
  • - Carbon and fiberglass reinforcements
  • - Titanal binding reinforcement
  • - 1700 grams / 179cm
