Atomic Backland 109 Skis

Our Take On The 2026 Atomic Backland 109:

"Backland" is a longstanding name in Atomic's lineup. The ski has gone from resort freeride focused, to offering skinny, ultralight skimo models. But the goal remains the same: to give you the tools to escape the confines of the busy trails and resorts to find some space in the backcountry. This all-new Atomic Backland 109 is a no brainer for someone looking for a daily driver in the backcountry in soft snow conditions. Redesigned HRZN 3D gives you more float and shaves weight from the tip of the ski. You'll find increased float with the beveled edges, and the Backland's HRZN 3D features small slits to maximize weight savings and simultaneously lowers the swing weight. Atomic also made moves to be more sustainable with this ski. By sticking with a poplar wood core and minimizing fiberglass and metal, their skis require less raw materials while maintaining the same performance you expect from Atomic.

Now, losing fiberglass or metal might make a skier wonder, "will it be stable enough at speed? Damp enough in mixed snow?" Our ski nerds thought the same thing. But when we got a chance to test the Backland 109 on snow, we didn't know what hit us. The directional shape delivers inspired edge hold for firm snow or corn harvest season. The HRZN 3D floated like promised, and the ski tracked well through mixed snow. Wind buff? You'll ski it like pow. Scoured or sastrugi snow? The ski won't do anything unpredictable. It is a ~1500 gram ski, but it packs a punch and is genuinely fun to ski.
