They're more than just sticks.

Some go without them, but if you're anything like us, ski poles feel like a security blanket. Ski poles help you escape long traverses, help you out of the hot tub in deep snow, and give you rhythm while you ski. But how do you know which one to choose? We've compiled a list of our best ski poles at the shop right now, to make that little decision much easier.

Need some ski pole shopping advice?

The good news is that out of all your ski gear purchasing decisions, the ski pole is perhaps the easiest. You're mostly trying to find the appropriate length and a design that fits your personal style.

Finding the right size: We're one step ahead of you! Check out our handy-dandy ski pole size chart.

If you feel caught between sizes, shorter poles will be easier to flick around and help you stay in a more forward stance. Longer poles are more supportive for folks newer to skiing and will help you plant your pole quicker. Most staffers here at the shop use poles on the shorter end of the spectrum for them, but it is all personal preference (and something you probably won't notice too much).

What's the best pole construction? The worst fear is a broken pole during an awesome ski day. Most modern poles have a good balance of strength to weight. Aluminum is the cheapest and heaviest. Carbon fiber poles are often used in backcountry poles, where folks look to save grams in every area. They're significantly lighter, but lose some strength under large impacts. We're partial to graphite composite poles. These poles hit a nice balance between weight and strength. That's what we use in our Powder7 poles, which you can find below. We don't think a single staffer has broken a pair yet (but we wouldn't put it past them).

Pole baskets: You'll see poles come with various pole baskets and grips on them. Smaller baskets are typically seen on poles designed for general resort use. They're great for park skiers and carvers because they stay out of the way. Bigger baskets are best for deeper snow and backcountry skiers since they don't punch through the snow as aggressively. Either is totally fine, and a small basket on a powder day won't prevent you from enjoying the fun.

Grips: You might notice different grips on different poles. Most normal grips will feel similarly ergonomic. But some poles will come with extended foam grips (like on our Powder7 Powder Pokers), which give you some options on where to hold the pole. This is great for folks who like to use a fixed pole rather than an adjustable one, but still want some freedom to change their pole's effective length.
