This Gear Is A Staff Favorite:

Powder7 Staff Pick Jordan
By: Jordan
I'm so in love with this boot and I know that many at Powder7 share this sentiment. After exclusively skiing AT boots with a walk mode for over a decade, I took advice from some at Powder7 and added a dedicated downhill boot for resort days. I was immediately blown away with how comfy these felt as well as their performance.
First let's talk fit. Lange makes the RX 130 in a normal width version which is just the RX 130 as well as the low volume i.e. more narrow version which is the RX 130 LV. The same goes for the RX 120 which is just a little less stiff than the 130. I have a narrow foot so the LV version fit me well out of the box. If you have a regular width foot then the LV should fit well too as long as you're expecting a super snug fit and are ok likely getting the boot punched out in spots. Aside from that, the fit feels really nice and the liner is comfy like a winter cabin on a snowy night.
Now onto the performance. My two favorite things about this boot are the progressive flex and the stiff back of the boot. The progressive flex means that the boot handles both little flexes forward like the forces of carving on a groomer as well as the big forces like skiing bumps or landing jumps. It's tough to do both well but this boot does it and feels super smooth and never jarring yet has plenty of backbone to handle super aggressive skiing as you'd expect with a 130 flex boot. I was worried that the boot would be so stiff that it'd pound me while landing jumps but quite the opposite, the flex feels great in those situations. For my type of freestyle oriented skiing, I wouldn't mind a softer boot board (the plastic board that's under the liner), maybe a foam one like the XT3 touring boot has, but that's splitting hairs a bit.
For the stiff back of the boot, that's another area where I find that this boot outperforms any touring boot. Like many skiers, when I get thrown off on the slopes and especially going off jumps and drops, it's often because I end up a smidge too backseat. Boots with a walk mode inevitable seem to flex back in that situation which only makes it worse, putting me even more backseat. The RX doesn't have that problem and is like a helping hand to correct me back into a more forward position. At the same time, I've tested a few race oriented boots in the past that are too stiff in the back of the boot but I've never found that to be the case with these.
One last thing, don't be scared off by the 130 flex of these. I'm 165 pounds and was concerned that 130 would be too much but I haven't found that at all with these as I kind of went into with how much I like the progressive flex of these. So it's ok to err on the stiffer side with the RX boots.
