These poles do everything you'd expect out of a pole (namely, help create that fulcrum), but the extra features are where these really shine! The built-in screwdrivers are super handy for on-the-go adjustments, the height adjustability is useful when touring, and they're nice and lightweight. The SQS version also has breakaway straps, so you can use them stress-free in terrain you may otherwise go strapless. Overall, great, reliable poles with a bunch of useful features!

This is the best pole on the market. I believe Newton's third law goes something like "If you look good, you'll feel good, and if you feel good, you'll ski good. Therefore, if you look good, you'll ski good." Well my friends, these poles look NICE. The slick, gunmetal grey colorway with Chris Benchetler's custom graphic gives these poles a deceptively simple, yet elegant appearance. They may not catch the eye from afar, but they'll hold its attention up close. And it gets better... To you gearheads/utilitarians out there, these poles can be unsheathed to reveal screwdrivers(posi and flathead) for on the fly gear adjustments! Fun fact: the FR in the name stands for "For Real, these are the best poles on the market."

    Our Take:

The Atomic Backland FR SQS is a telescopic ski pole to go with Atomic's Bent Chetler and wider Backland skis. It's been designed and developed with the help of freeski legend Chris Benchetler. A good freeride pole needs to keep you light, nimble and focused on the job. So they've made it from lightweight aluminum alloy, given it a bike-inspired FR grip that won't slip and an 85mm powder basket for better floatation. But in the backcountry a good pole needs to do more than help you ski well, so Atomic built-in a handy ski-binding screwdriver for adjustments and repairs on the move. The pole also has a carbide tip to protect against rocks and trees, and you can adjust it from 110cm to 130cm. The SQS version here has Atomic's sweet Safety Quick Release System, which will allow the pole straps to release in case of a crash. Long gone are the days of losing poles from skipping the straps!

    • - Ski binding screwdriver inside poles
    • - FR Grip
    • - Padded Strap
    • - Safety Quick Release System
    • - 97mm Powder Basket
