Video: How to Use the Salomon Shift Binding

The First True Hybrid Alpine Touring Binding

The Shift—now offered in versions from Salomon, Atomic, and Armada—revolutionized the world of alpine touring ski bindings when it was released a couple years ago. It’s incredibly popular and an awesome product, but it can take some getting used to. Here at Powder7, we occasionally receive calls from first-time users struggling to step into it or finding that their toes release too easily. Follow these seven steps to use your Shift, and you’ll be good to go.

How to Use the Salomon Shift

1. Depress the toe lever and line up the pins with your boots.

2. Lock the lever. Be sure to pull it past the middle position until it’s almost vertical. (Many first-time users don’t lock it out fully on their first attempt).

3. Make sure the heel lever is switched to WALK.

4. Step down to lock out the brakes…then skin up.

5. At the top of your line, switch the toe to ski mode and lock the lever in a down position.

6. Flip the heel lever into ski mode.

7. Step in like a normal alpine binding and send it!
