Everybody’s Free To Ski Powder: Volkl Two Ski Review

Growing up in the UK, I remember a late 90’s hit “Everybody’s Free (To Wear Sunscreen)” this spoken word song – based on a potential commencement speech written by Mary Schmich – sprung to mind because it points out that, we should accept certain inalienable truths!

“Prices will rise, politicians will philander, you, too, will get old and when you do, you’ll fantasize that when you were young Prices were reasonable, politicians were noble and children respected their elders”

For what it’s worth I’d like to add to that list with some of my own inalienable truths

Winters are getting warmer, powder days are getting further apart, and you too, will find yourself fantasizing even more, about the powder days of seasons past! You’ll also wish more than ever, that you have the right tools on your feet when those deep deep days do arrive!

One of those tools is THE VOLKL TWO

The 2015 Volkl Two: In All Its Orange Highlighter Glory

Here at Powder7, we recently enjoyed a shop trip to Wolf Creek, during a storm which placed over 100 inches on the San Juan Mountains around the ski area. See Justin’s review of our experiences over the weekend! It was during this trip I had the absolute pleasure, joy and reward of skiing on the Two’s

I’ve always enjoyed the first lift ride of the day. It’s where those last minute questions come briefly to mind as I feel the cold on my face and the anticipation of the day ahead builds, for me this feeling is only increased when you’re riding one of the first chairs and it’s a powder day!

I’m around 5’10 (on a generous day) and where possible I tend to favor larger radius turns where I can carry a little more speed – in the 186cm length the radius is 28.2 meters or 30.84 yards in your American measurements. This is one reason I do seem to enjoy Volkl skis, as their big mountain line-up and stiffer flex supports my preferred turn shape both with their stats but also their performance. Put simply as you increase speed moving from one giant arc to the next, I found that the Two responds with a dampness that is both soothing and reassuring.

The Two In Action: Brought About Insurmountable Joy And Pleasure, Or Was It Just The Conditions?

Moving on from the exhilaration of ripping fast turns I was blown away by the maneuverability the Two displayed in tight trees. No doubt aided by its considerable reverse camber and early taper, this design stops the ski from feeling hooky in the deep snow and allows you to play around with slashing the snow like a surfer on a wave. In short its profile design and construction allows the Two to change instantly from burly stampeding buffalo to nimble feline. With an increasing confidence in my chosen weapon of the day, I took to some pillow lines and stomped a few drops, and the Volkl Two suited me in all these situations – way more than the stiff boot I was wearing did!

Volkl claim that their big mountain free ski line-up are “inspired designs to make the big days better” and at 124mm underfoot the Two can certainly handle the big days! It’s a great choice for advanced skiers that want to smear through ‘floaty’ turns, that are looking for a ski that is lively enough to offer some pop assistance but then want a ski that can be laid out and arced at high speed, all in one colorful – the top sheet is a bright highlighter orange (see earlier picture) – package.

The final inalienable truth is: You may not need a pair of the Volkl Two’s but you will get a pair!

Why? Because you cannot afford not to have a ski this good in your quiver! For those deep days, for those not so deep days, for any day you feel like wearing sunscreen.

Remember everyone’s free to ski powder and the Two will certainly help you do that! Click here to order the Volkl Two from our shop, Powder7.com
