{"id":8135,"date":"2018-05-04T09:50:31","date_gmt":"2018-05-04T15:50:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.powder7.com\/ski-blog\/?p=8135"},"modified":"2018-06-19T14:52:35","modified_gmt":"2018-06-19T20:52:35","slug":"austria-hut-skiing-stubai-alps","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.powder7.com\/ski-blog\/austria-hut-skiing-stubai-alps\/","title":{"rendered":"Why You Should Go Hut Skiing in Austria Right Now"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By Lily Krass<\/p>\n<p><strong>\u201cI think that was our bus,\u201d<\/strong> Max said, looking across the street to the train station.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Two minutes\u00a0after the hour, we watched the 9 a.m. bus take off for the neighboring town. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our hustle\u00a0through the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Altstadt <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(old town) with skis and heavy packs on our backs was in vain. But it didn&#8217;t matter. He drove us through\u00a0a few picturesque and snow-capped villages.\u00a0Twenty minutes later we were skinning up the valley on our way to the Westfalenhaus. How&#8217;s that for a transfer?<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><strong>Close but Far<\/strong><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Westfalenhaus, an Alpine Club hut, sits at 7,457 feet, right smack in the middle of a breathtaking valley in the Stubai Alps. The trailhead is only about an hour from Innsbruck, but there\u2019s\u00a0no evidence of the lively, cultural hub we left. It takes but a few minutes up the valley to feel the warm, familiar embrace of quiet, snowy mountains. Towering peaks loom over the hut on all sides.\u00a0Steep, narrow\u00a0couloirs are sprinkled into each slope.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The ascent to the hut\u00a0is pretty mellow\u2014about 2,100 feet over three miles along the well-marked <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Winterweg <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(winter trail). A few minutes later we had swapped ski boots for slippers and were enjoying a large <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kaiserschmarrn<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014a delicious, pancake-like dessert that everyone should experience at least a dozen times\u2014in the cozy dining room.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A hut trip in the States usually involves carrying in all your food, packing out your trash and going through your morning routine in a chilly wooden outhouse. The Alps are a different story. We wandered up the valley to explore the vast terrain above us. The expansiveness was staggering, and we got a few good glimpses of the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hoher Seblaskogel <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and the <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Langentaler Wei\u00dfer Kogel, two aesthetic objectives with sustained, wide-open descents and totally unpronounceable names. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Visibility wasn\u2019t great during our stay, so we were confined mostly to terrain close to the hut. Luckily the chutes right above the Westfalenhaus\u00a0stayed clear thanks to the jagged, rocky walls enclosing them. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On our second day we started up a steep, 1,500-foot chute we\u2019d been staring at since we arrived. We skied right out the door to the bottom of the line in less than five minutes\u2014imagine if all approaches were this easy?\u2014and bootpacked straight up the gut.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It was only after our gung-ho climb that we learned something about European backcountry skiers: They hate bootpacking. They&#8217;ll do about anything to avoid it.\u00a0Skiing a line a few days later that I nicknamed \u201cKick Turn City,&#8221; we followed a skintrack up a 30-foot wide couloir that\u00a0kick-turned more than 100 times\u00a0up the steep face.<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8140\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8140\" style=\"width: 900px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-8140\" src=\"http:\/\/www.powder7.com\/ski-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Credit-Max-Ritter-3.1.jpg\" alt=\"backcountry skiing austria\" width=\"900\" height=\"601\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.powder7.com\/ski-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Credit-Max-Ritter-3.1.jpg 900w, https:\/\/www.powder7.com\/ski-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Credit-Max-Ritter-3.1-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.powder7.com\/ski-blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/04\/Credit-Max-Ritter-3.1-768x513.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 900px) 100vw, 900px\" \/><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8140\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Our exploring paid off. | PHOTO: Max Ritter<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For the latter part of our trip, temps\u00a0hovered\u00a0right around freezing and we encountered an inconsistent wind slab and breakable crusts on quite a few lines. The snow was funky to say the least. But after a few strikeouts we found smooth, creamy powder on a chute above the hut. We linked the soft, flowy turns that are good wherever you are in the world.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s something magically irreplaceable about a well-earned descent.\u00a0We gazed back up at our line with satisfied smiles stretching our faces. We exchanged high fives, laughing like giddy 10-year-olds and made a beeline back to the hut for some afternoon libations. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Radlers and the sweet smell of apple strudel greeted us. We clinked glasses as we settled back into the cozy shelter of the hut, gazing out the window at the endless amount of lines we\u2019ll surely\u00a0return to ski one day. <\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Plan Your Trip<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We flew into Malpensa and spent a solid day train-hopping and wrestling with our colossal ski bag getting to and from Innsbruck. Milan was by far the cheapest flight, but Munich is a much more convenient airport if you\u2019re trying to get to Innsbruck. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once you\u2019re in Innsbruck, it\u2019s super easy to get around. Free buses leave every hour for half a dozen ski resorts and if you need to get somewhere more remote, cabs are quick and affordable. We stayed in the Old Town at <a href=\"http:\/\/www.nepomuks.at\/hostel-innsbruck.html\">Nepomuk\u2019s<\/a>, a comfortable and inexpensive backpacker hostel located right above <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tripadvisor.com\/Restaurant_Review-g190445-d1979114-Reviews-Cafe_Munding-Innsbruck_Tirol_Austrian_Alps.html\">Cafe Munding<\/a>, Tirol\u2019s oldest bakery. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <a href=\"https:\/\/translate.google.com\/translate?hl=en&amp;sl=de&amp;u=https:\/\/de.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Westfalenhaus&amp;prev=search\">Westfalenhaus<\/a>\u00a0has a winter and summer season, with winter accommodations running from mid February to late April. It sleeps 60, although when we arrived on a Monday afternoon we almost had the place to ourselves.
