It’s that time of year again.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n

With Labor Day around the corner, we’re indulging in some ski dreams about the upcoming season and new gear. To start off our Ullr celebrations, we wanted to share a sneak peek of our upcoming annual Buyer’s Guide. This just a selection of some of the new skis our staff loved at our annual staff Ski Test. Real feedback from real skiers, who are just as snow obsessed as you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

So what’s the theme of the year? A little bit of everything. While last year focused on a lot of new all-mountain options, this year hosts new skis in nearly every category. From frontside and firm snow chargers to a range of playful and powerful skis in the freeride category. Our staffers have been loving how versatile many of these new skis are, with appeals to progressing skiers stoked to explore the mountain, to seasoned chargers looking for a ski to support their ski style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nordica Unleashed 106<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Don’t let the colorful drip fool you, this ski may be playful but has as serious backbone behind it. A new shape from the previous Unleashed 108 with a new metal construction, the Unleashed 106 feels just about as balanced as you could want in a freeride ski. Opened up taper and deeper rocker allows the ski to swivel and pivot like a true playful ski when in tight terrain, but it still tracks smoothly through tough snow. Nordica worked some magic to balance this shape to simultanously lock into firm snow on a carve, making this one of the stronger carvers in the big-mountain category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Nordica trimmed down the metal to just a strip that runs around binding width down the center of the ski. That delivers power and helps the ski track consistently through snow, while the moderate amount of metal keeps it energetic and not as planky as heavier skis. Overall, Nordica landed on yet another Golidlocks ski that delivers confidence to progressing skiers, while serving experts who fall close to the “playful charger” line on the spectrum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re more of a playful rider, check out the sans metal Unleashed 106 CA<\/a><\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Stockli Montero AR Pro<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

If the regular Stockli Montero AR didn’t feel like enough ski for you, or you were dissapointed to hear that the Montero got a softer construction last cycle, take a look at the new Montero AR Pro. This ski is for hard chargers who are here to chomp up firm snow conditions with reckless abandon. It’s a high-performance, top of the line all-mountain piste ski that will deliver strong turns and plush suspension. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The Pro differs from the Montero regular with no milled holes in the titanal in an effort to increase torsional rigidity. Stronger torsional rigidity gives you more support and better tracking through crud when you have the ski tipped on edge, but often requires a bit more input to engage the ski and get all the energy out of it. That said, Stockli always manages to make these ride easier than you’d expect, so you’ll find a bit smoother turn initiation than you’d expect of a ski with this shape and construction. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Armada Antimatter 100<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

The old Declivity was a sleeper favorite among Powder7 staffers, but it did feel slightly out of place in the line. The all-new Armada Antimatter 100 feels much more inline with the Armada freeskiing heritage, while creating a more chargey ski for our freeriders who like a more stable and stiffer ski. A bit more tail rocker and taper gives you more ability to swivel the ski, but we would still put it solidly in the directional category. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

A major difference of this model compared to the Declivity\/Reliance is a lower camber profile and a distinctly less snappy and rebounding feel. It feels closer to the snow and more swivel-y. You won’t rebound back and forth between turns with a real snappy feel, but it allows you to unlock a cool drifty style. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Don’t forget to check out the hallmark ski in the collection, the Armada Antimatter 114.<\/a><\/strong> Not only is this the ski of choice for Ben Richards, champ of the Freeride World Tour, but also Toby Rafford who took 3rd. Two out of three ain’t bad. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“<\/em>Very playful. slightly stiffer than the ARV 100 giving it a more hard charging quality while still maintaining the classic Armada Softness. It’s an amazing option as a do-it-all daily driver ski. Chargy for a soft and still playful for a ski that does so well on piste.” – Jackson<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

K2 Mindbender 101<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Fresh ski design doesn’t come around all that often, so it’s big news when it does. This year, K2 is introducing “Dark Matter” technology. What could that space magic mean on snow? K2 designed these new freeride skis to be lighter on your feet, but just as powerful. Dark Matter are the weights placed strategically at the tip and tail (on the 101, closer to the bindings for a more playful and drifty feel), allowing them to reduce the amount of metal and materials, but maintain the same performance. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 101 in particular comes with a real freeride flavor, with a highly manuverable feel and a quick response time. That comes alive on trail, making this a surprising high-performer on trail for the waist width. That said, there’s no denying the surfy taper maximizes float when soft snow comes around. Combined with the new design for a flickable ride in bumps and trees, you get a lot of versatility. Sort of exactly what you want in an all-mountain ski. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

If you’re looking for more firm snow performance, take a peek at the K2 Mindbender 96<\/a><\/strong>, which moves the bumpers out closer to the tip and tail for better performance on firm snow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Wants to take off on groomers. Really easy to ski on groomers, great carving ski, light but stable. Fun ski! Stable at high speeds, which surprised me because the ski is lightweight. You’ll catch me ripping everywhere on these.” – Kyra<\/em> S.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Faction Dancer 89 Ti<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Listen: this gear writer had a heck of a time picking which new Dancer goes in this slot. I’ve elected to go with the Dancer 89 Ti, mostly because I think it fills the biggest hole in Faction’s lineup, and builds on the stoke of the Dancer 79 Ti<\/a> <\/strong>that blew our socks off last year. That said, the Dancer 89 <\/strong>sans metal, and the Dancer 99<\/a> <\/strong>and Dancer 99 Ti<\/a><\/strong> all rip. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Frankly, Faction crushed this project. As an owner of an old Dancer, they’ve taken the great features of that ski while making it more compliant and more fun. It still crushes through variable terrain (something you want in a metal ski), but delivers just enough slarve-ability to unlock some looseness. The energy and rebound you get out of this ski is really unique. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now that I just sold my old Dancer 2s, I guess I’ll be adding another one back. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“It was super damp and stable on crud straight up bulldozer, but without the demanding feel. It’s a do-it-all charger. Super stable but not overly demanding. Tails come around easily.” – Sara B. <\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Volkl Revolt 112<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Yet again expanding the freeride Revolt collection, Volkl introduces the new Revolt 112. You might think, “there’s a heck of a lot of Revolts now,” and that may be true. But each one serves a unique purpose. This new 112 slots between the 104 and 121 in regards to shape, with a progressive, heavily rockered and tapered shape. The flex is soft and buttery, easy to press to bend, while carrying that classic Volkl dampness that’s rare in skis with this profile. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

While close in waist width to the 114, the 112 is much more suited for skiers with an upright ski style, folks taking freestyle tricks to big-mountain terrain, or anyone who enjoys a surfy ski that has enough chops to remain stable in variable snow. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Feels like a proper big mountain ski but still fun on blue\/black moguls. Carves well for a 112 and skis predictably with easy turn initiation. Kept up with Stockli’s. Something I would take to Alaska, but also daily driver in CO.” – Blake<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

Icelantic Torrent 96<\/a> + Tempest 94<\/a><\/h3>\n\n\n\n

Icelantic is jumping in to the upcoming season with a loud new all-mountain collection: the men’s Torrent and women’s Tempest. These skis are a depature from what we expect from Icelantic models, with a decidely directional shape and stiffer construction. The 96 and 94 sit in the middle of the family with the most versatility. Smooth riding and stable on groomed terrain, with impressive edge hold for a ski without any metal. Carbon stringers add stability without making the ski too rigid, while also adding pop and rebound. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

We loved this collection for intermediates looking for a versatile option that will help them progress their skills, all the way up to advanced and expert riders who are looking for a smooth ride that doesn’t require the intensive input that a heavy metal ski requires. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

“Icelantic finally built a stiffer ski that can handle firm snow better! More confident carving for those who want a sick topsheet and laydown carves. Best carver of the Icelantic lineup. Great graphics this year! Good groomer ski for the ladies.” – Kyra<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n
