Icelantic is a vibrant company that makes fun freeride/freestyle skis, and everyone knows it. They put John Wayne on a new freeride ski, for crying out loud! But for brands like that, building a different type of ski—a directional all-mountain ski, in this case—can prove challenging. How do you expand the narrative to include legit skis of different types in your repertoire?

It’s a question Icelantic unpacked for their latest ski release: The Torrent. The Icey braintrust loves where the skis ended up and are stoked to build serious hype around the new models. When I saw them, I loved the artwork, per usual. And I hoped their on-snow performance would stack up.

The sleek Torrent 88, woodsy 96, and badass 102. Who knew Pinecones could go so hard?

Icelantic Torrent 96 Review: Field Notes

The Icelantic Torrent series, and the women’s Tempest line, feature poplar and birch wood cores. Along with new shapes and profiles, the biggest construction story here is Icelantic’s V12 Carbon Matrix. It builds on Icelantic’s addition of carbon to the Nomad and Maiden lines from a couple seasons back, stacking more material into the tips and tails of the Torrent and Tempest. In V-shaped formation, the carbon lines these areas of the skis. Stringers reinforce the mid-body, running from tip to tail.

When I flexed these skis by hand, I noticed relatively soft tips and tails for a directional all-mountain ski. Underfoot, they’re stout. I actually felt like they skied stiffer with more uniform suspension than this first impression indicated. Classic hand-flex trap! Icelantic does ramp up the stiffness as the skis get wider. So the 88 will be the most snappy with the most rebound, while the 102 will offer more charge-ability for variable snow conditions in freeride terrain. The 96 threads the middle.

If you’re familiar with the Icelantic collection, you probably already know where this ski fits. It replaces the Pioneer of old, offering the directional, all-mountain contrast to the Nomad’s freeride/freestyle character. That means you’ll find less taper and rocker here, along with less tail splay and a non-symmetrical shape, compared to those skis. The Torrent is Icelantic’s push to offer a performance-oriented all-mountain ski that directional-ish skiers will reach for on most days of the year.

The Icelantic Torrent 96

Icelantic offers up the Torrent in three waist widths: 88, 96, and 102.

Here are some more tech specs:

Dimensions: 137 / 96 / 121

Radius: 18m (182cm)

Available lengths: 166, 171, 176, 182, 188

I spec out just shy of 5’7″ and about 170 pounds. Frozen, corded, soft-packed, manmade, smooth, chopped—we’re talking groomers of all kinds. That does some new skis a disservice. But it was A-OK for the Torrent 96.

In all of the above snow conditions, the Torrent 96 handled on-piste skiing better than any Icelantic I’ve skied. The contact points and the shape are dialed to allow smooth and intuitive carving at all speeds. Like the Pioneer, these skis prefer to be driven hard by a strong skier. But that doesn’t mean they only want to go fast. They felt equally at home railing long arcs at top speed as they did slowing things down and making more technical, precise carves. I attribute that to the dynamic tip and tail construction. The carbon gives you energy while also smoothing the ride. The flex pattern made the skis feel intuitive and supportive. There was no blocky-ness or excessive rigidity, but the Torrent can absolutely handle high-input skiing at high speeds.

The Torrent 96 loved cruising around Loveland Ski Area on a bluebird test day. PHOTO: Casey Day

Bumps and Trees

In tighter places, like moguls and tree alleys, the difference between the Torrent and the Nomad becomes most pronounced. Unsurprisingly.

The Torrent 96 weighs in right around 2,000 grams per ski. That puts it right on the border of what we call midweight and heavyweight resort skis. In other words: These skis don’t feel light underfoot. For bumps and trees, that means two things. One: They want to be driven, and they want you to stay forward in your boots. And two: They provide underfoot stability that plants you to your line.

Especially compared to current Icelantic favorites, like the Nomad and the Saba/Nia, the Torrent can punish you when your form falls apart. But compared to the Pioneer, I felt like the Torrent offers better suspension and a smoother feel.

In bumps, the tip shape (and softer flex, perhaps) really help you slither. Again, these skis don’t have to go fast. They just want you to stay on top of them. Meanwhile the tails, with their slight splay, shape, and rocker, can be easily released when you need to dump speed or shut things down. In moguls, they reminded me of one of my favorite 96mm ski ever, the Blizzard Rustler 9. The Torrent felt more damp than the Rustler to me. That ski has some explosive energy. But the intuitiveness of the ride was comparable.

The Torrent 96 might be the smoothest ski Icey has built. PHOTO: Casey Day

Mixed Snow and Powder

One of my test days on the Torrent 96 featured some sunny low-tide slush-hunting. In other words, the type of day that might not be everyone’s (anyone’s?) favorite to ski, but one that makes for great ski testing. They held up better than I expected.

In shadowy places where the snow hadn’t softened yet, that stout build underfoot came in handy. I felt like I could stand on them and confidently set and hold edges. Where the sun had begun to work its magic, they were dynamic enough to air troughs, slash slush piles, or power through soft chop. That’s the feeling you want in an all-mountain ski: Reliable performance whatever the snow is doing. Color me impressed.

I didn’t get a chance to ski the Torrent 96 in true powder. Google “Last winter in Colorado” if you’re wondering why. My guess is this: The shape and the rocker profile will help the skis float and shmear. The fact that the tails are just about as soft (in the shop!) as the tips will help them feel poppy and fun. But they’ll still feel more like a ski that wants to attack the fall line with directional, technical arcs than a loose party-seeker (like the Nomad). Again, I see the Torrent being more fun and lively than the Pioneer in these conditions, but it will check out far damper than the Nomad or some other more playful all-mountain skis.

It’s not as playful as the Nomad, but the Torrent 96 can get funky. PHOTO: Casey Day

Downside?

A couple guys I was skiing with on a test day at Loveland were a little disappointed with how planted and damp the Torrent 96 felt. It’s a good thing, they said, for mixed snow. But they had hoped the skis would bring more liveliness and rebound. Personally, I didn’t feel that way. While maybe not the most lively in the category, I thought it was a fun, energetic carver. And I appreciated the tip-and-go smoothness when linking fast turns. But those guys are strong skiers, so their criticism registers as a valid possible downside for some folks.

Bottom Line

In rebuilding the Pioneer and revitalizing their approach to a true all-mountain ski, I think Icelantic nailed the assignment. The Torrent 96 feels like the most refined and balanced all-mountain ski I’ve ever tested from Icelantic. The fact that it doesn’t pack as much freeride zhuzh as some other 96s out there actually underscores that success. At the same time, it’s more dynamic than the ski it replaces, making it competitive with some of the most popular models in the all-mountain category.

For advanced to expert skiers looking to add a directional ski to the quiver, or directional skiers who want a fresh take on their daily driver, the Torrent 96 deserves to land on the shortlist.

Shop new and used Icelantic Skis

Icelantic’s new daily driver?
