To make it even better, they keep churning out fantastic skis year after year. But specifically in the last two seasons, Icelantic dialed it up. A new Nomad/Maiden series features updates we adore and adds a zip and snap to those skis we were missing. For this upcoming season, Icelantic turned to its all-mountain collection for a revamp. Three years of design work, prototype testing, and refining later, and we have an all-new women’s-specific all-mountain ski that looks (and rides) like fine wine. In our Icelantic Tempest 94 review, we dive into how the ski differs from the Maiden, who it’s for, and how it stacks up against some of the best-selling skis in the world.

The gorgeous Icelantic Tempest 94 and Tempest 100 on the right.

Icelantic Tempest 94 Review: Field Notes

The Icelantic Tempest and men’s Torrent series have a poplar and birch wood core (poplar known for being quite poppy and light, birch a bit stiffer and heavier), with their new V12 Carbon Matrix. The carbon design is shaped like a V in the tips and tails, with long stringers running down the middle of the ski from tip to tail. The carbon adds stability and precision, while also adding a bit more zip and pop compared to titanal.

Compared to the freeride-oriented Maiden, the Tempest has a more directional rocker profile and shape. Where the Maiden is more symmetrical, the Tempest has a more moderate taper at the tail. You still get a significant amount of taper in the tip and lots of rocker, which should make the ski nice and surfy in soft snow, while also being intuitive to turn on firm snow.

The Icelantic Tempest 94

The Tempest doesn’t differ too much from the Torrent on the inside. You get the same wood core and flex patterns, but just a tweak in how the sidecuts are shaped.

As far as differences in the Tempest line, the Tempest 94 sits in the middle with a Tempest 88 and Tempest 100 on either side. The skis get a bit stiffer as you go wider, with the idea being that the 88s are more accessible, fun, and easy to engage for progressing skiers, while the wider skis are more suitable for harder charging riders who need a firm snow ski. Since the 94 sits right in the middle, that makes it a perfect Goldilocks with some heft for staying stable on firm snow, while remaining intuitive and more flickable.

All three skis get custom artwork by Travis Parr, with these golden Gingko leaves on all the models. So good!

Here are some more tech specs:

Dimensions: 135 / 94 /119

Radius: 14m (169cm)

Available lengths: 155 / 162 / 169 / 176

At 5’8″ and 135lbs, I rode both the 169cm Tempest and 176cm Torrent. I’m pretty happy on anything from 170cm-178cm, and this is definitely a ski I’d prefer in the 176cm length. You can size fairly true to size, but if you find yourself between sizes, don’t be afraid to jump up.

Groomers

With the Maiden/Nomad series and many of Icelantic’s experimental shapes living square in the freeride world, the Tempest differs on paper by offering more reliable performance for groomed terrain. And on snow? The Tempest totally delivers. It’s predictable, snappy, and energetic coming out of turns.

While older Icelantic constructions may have suffered from not being as responsive as other similar skis in the category, the Tempest 94 turns with agility that we expect with a mid-90s underfoot ski. I found in particular the precision on carves was dialed up compared to other Icelantic’s I’ve skied. You look at where you want to turn, push the ski that way, and it holds reliably.

It’s not a light ski, so the swingweight doesn’t feel as low as something like the Elan Ripstick 94, but that extra heft allows for superior dampening when the snow is icy, or when the groomers have transitioned to more mixed snow as it gets skied up.

Photo: Casey Day

Bumps and Trees

When you get into tighter terrain, that’s where you notice a big difference from the Maiden series. Where the Maiden is happy to pivot and slash, the Tempest does feel like it wants to hold a line a little more. It’s less easy to release the tails than an ultra rockered, more progressive shape, but still easier to skid a turn compared to more metal-heavy and directional skis. Who’s that, Goldilocks?

We found that same zippy energy off trail as it was on trail. To unlock that energy and that agility, the Tempest does ask for a bit of input into the shovels. Not as much as skis with metal in them, but certainly more than progressive, twin-tip-esque shapes. Again, hello Golidlocks. You get what you put into this ski. The extra work helps push the ski through funky snow, while still being lively and more engaging than some ultra-damp and planted skis.

I found myself really enjoying the balance of planted and liveliness when naviagting bump lines. Where some heavy and planted skis can feel a bit dead, this was happy to zip around some tight lines with me. I felt like I could take the turn shapes I wanted to, and skid to quick turns to avoid obstabcles when I needed. Not to mention, it rode consistently through some of the funky chalk we had after a week or so without a storm.

Mixed Snow and Powder

We haven’t gotten a chance to test the Tempest 94 in deep snow, but I did manage to find some mixed snow off-trail. Compared to the Maiden, the Tempest feels more reliable and consistent when pushing through this kind of snow. It also hits a really nice sweet spot of being able to ski dynamically through hard snow with quick release turns, or a bit more aggressively and cutting through it.

With a 94mm underfoot ski, you do sort of want to be able to do it all. Explore the mountain, hunt for soft snow, while having the agility to snap back and forth when needed. Nothing highlights those characteristics like skiing in mixed snow off-trail. Constantly transitioning from chalk, to scraped off patches, to soft drifts of powder, and this ski can handle it with ease.

Although I have no doubt the surfy tip will give you big bang for the buck at 94mm, it’s still a 94mm ski. If skiing lots of soft snow with a versatile platform is the goal, I’d look into the Tempest 100 for a better balance of soft snow performance.

Photo: Casey Day

Downside?

As with all Golilocks skis, you might miss a bit of metal for the hard chargers, or a bit more flickability for more playful skiers. I also think this ski requires a bit more input than an early intermediate may have in the tank. Where the 88 is much more accomodating of a more upright stance, the 94 and 100 ask for a bit of attention. Not nearly as much as the metal heavy Mantra W or Santa Ana series, but more than an Elan Ripstick or even the new Salomon QST 94.

Bottom Line

Overall, I think Icelantic nailed it when it comes to building the elusive Golilocks all-mountain ski. What I love most about it, they weren’t afraid to trend on the more charge-y side of things. This ski requires input in the shovels for it to really come alive, but it won’t beat you up in the back seat compared to some other heavy metal options.

To me, this ski works well for advanced intermediates who want something that rides smoothly and aren’t afraid of a little bit of ski to move around, especially since the shape is more friendly than some other directional skis in the category. Advanced and expert lady shredders will rejoice with a ski that rewards the effort they put in with a fun ride.

Shop new and used Icelantic Skis

We are beyond lucky to have a homegrown small ski biz right down the street from us.
