Here’s how to make it work even with a tight budget.

There’s no doubt—skiing is expensive. Between the passes, the travel cost, the gear, and the food on the mountain, it’s easy to feel like skiing is for the few. To boot, it only seems like they’re going in the wrong direction. Paid parking, the most expensive lift tickets we’ve ever seen, and of course, $20 burgers. But that’s not what skiing is all about. It’s not about the money or the wealth you can show off. Skiing is about the challenge, the joy of sliding on snow, and building connections. So, if you want to get out there, you should be able to—without breaking open that piggy bank you’ve been saving for years. After years of doing everything we can to keep skiing on pennies, here are our cheat codes for skiing on a budget. (Spoiler: with some advanced planning and budget-minded shopping, you can ski for cheap).

One of our favorite local ski areas, Loveland offers reasonably priced lift tickets and….free parking!

Mountain access

Gear or no gear, there’s no skiing if you can’t get on the hill. There’s a main hot item in discussing how expensive skiing is: lift ticket prices. With prices hitting a whopping $300 depending on the mountain and day, far gone are the days of wandering up to the ticket window on a given day and affording a lift ticket.

Shop around for affordable access

We love small ski areas here at the shop. Not only for their quiet atmosphere but their more affordable lift ticket options. These areas usually don’t offer the same glitz and glam as the other big box ski areas like Breck or Vail. But, they make up for that with plenty of terrain to choose from, quieter lift lines, and usually free parking and easy access.

Ski Cooper has some of the cheapest lift tickets in Colorado year-round, with substantially reduced kids and youth tickets. Ski Cooper also offers a whole zone of expert-only terrain with 700′ of vertical drop. Sugarbush in Vermont offers a quad pack that makes each day $84. Mt. Rose in Tahoe offers free parking, lots of terrain, and some discounted tickets throughout the week. I spotted a “Ladies’ Day” ticket for $69 this month. Wherever you want to travel to, do some research on the ski areas around that might offer some deals, especially if you ski midweek. More on that below.

Another good way to explore the slopes can be night skiing. These tickets are usually cheaper and pack in a great experience. You can often find events or live music at the base, making for a great night out with friends. Locally, we like to head up to Echo Mountain. The skiing is limited, but there is easy access from Denver, and purchasing in advance costs $35.

If nothing else, the golden rule is planning ahead. Lift tickets are always cheaper when purchasing ahead of time online, even if it means having more rigid plans.

You don’t need big resorts to find big pow. Sam Whelock skiing deep snow at Wolf Creek.

To season pass or not

Ski area managers want predictable revenue streams, so they encourage season pass purchases at the beginning of the season by raising the prices of “on the spot” purchases. With high lift ticket window prices, if you’re skiing certain ski areas more than five times a season (and maybe during peak times), it often makes sense to splurge for a season pass.

While a price tag of almost a thousand dollars for some season passes makes my heart skip a beat, it’s impossible to deny the mega passes offer insane value for the amount of access you get. Especially if you’re a frequent skier. If you’re local to Denver, products like the Ikon Base, Epic Local and the shockingly affordable Keystone Plus pass make a lot of sense if you’re skiing often off the I-70 corridor once a week in the winter. Throw in a trip to one of their partner resorts like Steamboat, Alta and Snowbird, Jackson, or Crested Butte, and the pass delivers proper value. Epic and Ikon now offer payment plans, which help spread out painful withdrawal.

If you know you’ll ski a decent amount, but want to get off the beaten track, shopping for an “alternative” season pass could be a wise move. The rebellious Indy Pass serves up incredible access at independent resorts. You get two days each and discounted tickets after the fact. This pass works incredibly well for weekend warriors who don’t mind driving to a new location. In the East and Midwest, this pass packs a ton of resorts in. The kicker? The pass sits pretty at under $400 for the season.

Skiing at Coronet Peak in New Zealand after hours. A common way for working holiday travelers to enjoy skiing on the South Island with much cheaper tickets (and a little party at the base).

Finding the gear

Where to rent

Of course, getting a good deal on lift tickets at a ski area doesn’t matter if you can’t get a hold of the gear. If you’re new to the sport, or aren’t skiing often, it’s hard to know when to jump from renting the gear to purchasing it. Especially, if you’ll be traveling to ski most of the time. Dive into how to know when to rent or buy skis here.

If you do decide to rent, try to rent away from the mountain (especially if you aren’t staying in on-mountain housing). Rental prices are usually significantly cheaper in major metro areas (think Denver or Salt Lake City). Sometimes mountains will have deals for lift tickets, rentals, and lessons, so if lessons are on the table, do some quick maths to decide which plan is cheaper.

How to buy

There’s a lot of lightly used equipment floating around.

The best way to get the best value on ski gear is by either shopping for deals on past season products, or shopping used. We may be biased, but we’re huge fans of shopping used. It’s a great way to jump into your first pair after renting and allows you to explore different ski types without dropping a lot of money into a full ski setup.

If there’s only room in the budget for one, we’ll always recommend buying boots first. If their boots fit well, we find skiers are way happier on whatever skis they can get their hands on, as opposed to brand-new skis with old, used boots. With so many shapes and molds out there, just getting in the right size may not solve all your problems. Find a local boot fitter, or visit a boot fitter when you travel to ski. Boots alone are a lot easier to travel with than the whole kit in tow.

Boot fittings are often free or come at a small fee, so if even now isn’t the right time to buy new, take the time to get your foot evaluated for length and width. Then peruse the Facebook marketplaces for select models that will fit you appropriately.

If you’re shopping for skis, check out our selection of used skis. Buying used through a retailer gives you the confidence that an expert looked over the skis and ensures there’s no major damage (rather than getting swindled by Craigslist).

If you’re really pinching pennies, check out your local consignment gear shop for skis, boots, and outerwear. Purchasing used outerwear is a great way to save on technical equipment, which will make your day on a cold and snowy day, much better.

Travel to and fro

Just like you must research and plan on lift tickets, doing that for travel will make your ski trip much better.

If you’re willing to rough it, a night in the truck bed is cheaper than the hotel room.

From the lodging to the mountain

While staying on-mountain offers ease of access, it’s usually much more expensive than staying further away. Renting a car is always an option, but depending on where you’re at, some areas have robust public transit. And with parking getting dismal in some areas, you can capitalize on the energy ski areas are putting into encouraging public transit.

Salt Lake City offers local regional transit, which helps you offset the parking fees in place at the major Wasatch resorts. The Frisco/Silverthorne area also offers some transit to Copper or Keystone. These are great options, especially with the new Snowstang service from Denver, there are ways to travel to major resorts in Colorado without needing a car rental (and worrying about driving in snowy conditions).

As usual, planning will help you secure the cheapest lodging that works well for your group size. But keep in mind, earliest isn’t always better. If you’re not traveling around peak times, sometimes rates will go down closer to the date as renters and hotels look to fill rooms at a discount.

I always look for rentals with decent kitchens, or at least a fridge and stove top. Being able to cook breakfast and dinner massively reduces the cost of a trip. If it’s easy to pack, bring snacks and reusable containers to bring food to the mountain.

While on mountain nachos is certainly enjoyable, be prepared to pay for it. Personally, I like to bring several bars or pocket PB&Js for the day, and splurge on a patio beverage or pizza split amongst a group. Purchasing full meals for a family can add up, so consider pocket snacks for the kids. That leaves room in a budget for dinners out, or for another day skiing.

The real ski bum maneuver

Of course, for a quick trip (and a small group), the old platform-in-the-back-of-a-car trick saves a whole bunch. This can be trickier mid-winter when weather could be downright frigid, but if you have plenty of camping gear, several ski areas offer overnight parking. Luckily, many ski areas are located in National Forests, with campgrounds and trailheads aplenty. Do your research (catching the theme, yet?) to make sure you don’t wind up on private property.

Bottom Line

For skiing on a budget, you can take a few tactics. Spend the money on a season pass product for big value and lots of skiing options, then save the money elsewhere on gear or travel. Take the time and patience to shop for used equipment. Or, shop small ski resorts to save on mountain access, especially while learning. There’s no need to travel to ritzy (and expensive) mountain communities Crested Butte or Telluride when cruising low-angle terrain.

But all these strategies have the same bottom line: plan in advance, and be realistic with what your ski goals and plans for the season are. Poke around off the beaten path to find small resorts. You’ll avoid spending excess money for last-minute plans, and make the most out of what you do invest in.

And, you might just find the real soul of skiing out there.

Read more ski lifestyle stories and travel tips

Skiing ain’t cheap.
