The stakes are pretty high when you decide to redesign the best-selling touring boot of all time. It's the kind of thing that keeps engineers up at night. For this new Maestrale, Scarpa kept it simple: make the boot lighter, stiffer, and easier to use. Now weighing in at a feathery 1400g per boot (which shaves 200g off of the old version), this new Maestrale is built with Scarpa's proprietary Grilamid material, bumping up the usable stiffness to a 110 flex rating. The old 4-buckle design is gone as well, replaced with 3 buckles and a minimalist, cable-driven Wave Closure System on the forefoot. When it's time to transition from the uphill to the downhill, the updated Speedlock Plus Hike/Walk mechanism is more durable, more elegant, and rock solid. Oh, and while you're climbing that skin track, you'll appreciate the new 60-degree range of motion--a huge increase over the old Maestrale's 39-degrees. Under the hood, even the best-in-class Intuition liner has been tweaked to maximize comfort and minimize friction. Lighter, stiffer, better: the old Maestrale is dead; long live the new Maestrale.
