This Ski Is A Staff Favorite:

    Powder7 Staff Pick Justin
    By: Justin
I'm an Alchemist fan, you guys, and the Wailer A106 is probably my favorite (though the Cassiar A95 would be super mad if it heard me say that). The Alchemist construction gains a little bit of weight over the old Pure3, but adds a rounder, more progressive flex that's more accessible to lighter and less aggressive skiers. I'm a smaller guy who doesn't mind a few extra grams underfoot, so that goes down as a great trade to me. But bigger and super aggressive skiers will also appreciate the more damp, less twitchy ride of the Alchemist. And that's what I like to see: talls and smalls enjoying the same ski. A 106mm waist is just about ideal for a Colorado daily driver, and the rocker profile is dialed in nicely for someone like me, who spends most of his time messing around in tight trees or other technical spots where quick-turning is essential. Oh, and this thing is pretty killer as a backcountry setup. There are lighter options, I suppose, but I can't think of any lighter skis that go downhill better than the Wailer A106. If you can come up with one, find me on Myspace and tell me about it.

Our Take On The 2019 DPS Wailer A106 Alchemist:

If you're searching for the best big mountain skis in the world, you'd do well to start with the DPS Wailer family. Where the svelte Wailer 99 outperforms the rest of the family in bumps and trees, and the Wailer 112 is unbeatable in untracked snow and open bowls, the Wailer 106 is perhaps the best daily driver of the bunch. For Western mountains, the 106mm-wide footprint is just about ideal: fat enough to float in the deep, and quick enough edge-to-edge to slay groomers. The patented Paddle Tech tapered sidecut maxes out the versatility for true all-mountain shredders. It progresses through turns with quickness and precision, and carves with the best of them. For a quiver-of-one ski meant to handle anything, no matter the terrain or conditions, the Wailer 106 is the connoisseur's choice.

Alchemist is the next step in the evolution of DPS's groundbreaking Pure3 carbon skis and the finest example of their relentless pursuit of innovation. The Alchemist construction uses vibration-tuned aerospace carbon and premium Aspen wood cores for a smoother ride and more progressive flex, without compromising the power and precision skiers have come to expect from DPS carbon skis. The end result is the ultimate piece of lightweight versatility.
