Fast Forward: 2015 Head Skis Preview

Graphically, Head knocks it out of the park in 2015.  Their new women’s Joy Series, has the best graphics I’ve ever seen on a women’s line of skis.  Clean, simple edges and lively colors (not to mention some serious forward-thinking technology) thanks to Head conducting a focus group with women from around the world.

2015 Head Joy Womens Ski Series
The 2015 Head Joy Women’s Ski Series. Simple. Refined. Beautiful.

The Big Joy (110mm), Great Joy (98mm), Total Joy (85mm), Super Joy (75mm) are all made of Graphene and a lightweight wood core.  The last two in the above lineup, the Absolut Joy (79mm) and Pure Joy (73mm) are made of Graphene and a lightweight composite core.  Haven’t heard of Graphene?  It’s ok, its inventors only won the Nobel Prize for Physics in 2010.  It’s not only incredibly strong, but also incredibly lightweight.

In their women’s lineup as well as their men’s all-mountain line, the Rev Series, Head shows they are committed to introducing more people to the sport of skiing with some great skis at killer prices.  Once again, we had to confirm that there is not a typo in Head’s pricing guide, the Rev 80 Pro will retail for $599 with bindings again in 2015.

2015 WorldCup Rebels
The 2015 WorldCup Rebels — look for these on the hills of Sochi next month!

The 2015 i.Supershape series, while relatively unchanged is another graphical homerun.  The main improvement made for the 2015 series is a wider, spring-loaded binding platform.

  2. Hi! I have a Super Joy since 2 weeks and as a woman, thanks for no “girly-pinky-flower” graphics finally! And those skis are GREAT. My technic is 50% better. It turns easily. I feel my ankles easily turning the ski. It feels like i have anything under my feet and i can jump and turn everywhere like a gazelle. I’m in love.

  3. I tryed the great joy and they are so light and the day I tried them was à perfect day 12 inches of powder snow and the sidecut was perfect for the powder.I like it so much that I can’t wait next year to have mine by the way I already order them but not sure to have it this year.

  4. Demo today and I was really blown away by the Head Skis. Never skied them until today and I was really impressed. I skied the Titan – Magnum, iSL, iSpeed (cheater GS), and the rep actually had me try a ladies ski…. I was really apprehensive but I have to say I can’t wait for Head to turn out a guys ski in that same construction (he promised they are on their way). My wife will love the Total Joy next year! Time to ditch the Nordica’s. I think I am now a Head guy!

  5. Hi, i’m keen to buy the great joy for new season. i’m looking for a versatile ski for backcountry touring, light on the uphill, good sidecut for amazing powder and easy controllable on hard snow.
is this the perfect ski for me? i wish to know the weight of the 168cm.
    thanks

  6. Hi Laura!

Thank you for your interest in The Great Joy, they are sure to be the biggest hit in Women’s skis this year. The Graphene technology is the latest greatest technology for strength to weight ratio in skis. It is essentially an evolution of carbon that is incredibly light and only one atom thick. These factors tell me that this will be an amazingly light touring ski that will have fantastic edge grip and stellar flotation for the downhill. I just threw these on the scale for you and they are exactly 7.75 lbs for the pair, or 3515 grams. Feel free to to call 303-237-7547 or email [email protected] with any questions!

    Have a great day,
    Zack

  7. Hi Zack,
Your answer about to Laura is the only place I found the weight of the Great Joy – thank you! What size would you recommend for someone who weights 109 lbs and for someone who weighs 129 lbs? Thank you

  8. Hi
I’m considering buying the Big Joy for this season. I need a pair of skis to skin up and then ski down in backcountry & pow. I wish to know the weight of the 168cm.
    Thx

  9. Hi Margi,

I am more than happy to recommend an appropriate size for you and whomever else. I would also need to know the height of each user as well to give you an accurate estimate.

Thanks and have a great day!

    Zack

  10. Hi Martina,

As you can see the Joy series is going to be quite popular this season and the Big Joy would make for a fantastic powder touring machine! I unfortunately do not have a 168cm length currently, so I do not know the exact weight. I did, however, weigh our 178cm pair we have in stock and that came out to exactly 8.90 lbs. I would say the 168cm would be about 2/3 of a pound less and would weigh in roughly at 8.24 lbs. We simply sold out of our first pair of Big Joy 168’s and more are on the way! Please let us know if you have any further questions or need assistance placing the order.

    Thanks,
    Zack

  11. Hi,
I have been unable to find a sizing chart for the 2015 Head skiis. I am 5’8″ 140 lb. advanced skier, living in the NW. I generally use an all-mountain ski, but I’m looking for something lighter weight and with more floatation. Most of my skiing is off piste. Last spring I demoed the Great Joy in the 168, (loved it) but it was groomer conditions, I’m wondering if the 168 is a good choice for me with Big Joy?
    Beth

  12. Hi Beth,

As far as I know there is not a specific 2015 Head sizing chart, but I can definitely help you find the ski that works best for you. As you have read in the comments, if you are looking for a lightweight ski with great flotation, the Great Joy is simply the cream of the crop. Even if you are skiing mostly off piste the 168 is the perfect size for you. I cannot imagine sizing up, especially if you ski bumps and trees. 178 would simply be too long to maneuver, and anything shorter than 168 would not get you proper stability.

Hopefully this helps, please let us know if you have further questions!

    Zack

  13. I am 5’4 and weigh 108. Am an intermediate skier, skiing mostly groomed with some powder. I am looking at the Absolute Joy ski (women’s) in a 148 length. Would this be a good choice for me?

    Jane

  14. Hi Jane!

Excellent! Almost always there are two sizes that people can choose between. I would say that you are right in between the 148cm length and 153cm length. The 148cm will certainly be easier to get out on right away with no learning curve, but the 153cm might serve you better in the long run as you advance your skills. In this ski, Head does a great job of offering many sizes so there is not even that much difference at 5cm between the two. I would say the 153cm is the way to go. It looks like we are currently sold out but please contact us if you would like us to special order you a pair!

    Thanks,
    Zack

  15. Hi,
I’m interested in the Great Joy as a backcountry/ski touring ski. Would you know what the weight is for the 158cm size ski?
    Thanks

  16. The Great Joy 158cm is 7.25lbs (or 3288g) for the pair with the plastic still on.

    Thanks,
    Katie

  17. Hi Lauren,
In plastic, the 158cm Big Joy weights 7.65lbs (3470g) on our shipping scale. Hope that helps!

    Justin

  18. Hi Zack,
I’ve demo’d the Great Joy twice – both times at 153cm, and intend to buy. i’m just trying to decide how long. the shop does not have 158cm (only 163 – which seem too long for me) – so i can’t try them. my current skis (Rossignol B3’s and K2 Phat Luv Powder Skis are both 160s). I’m 5/2.5″ and weigh about 106. in all modesty, i’m an advanced skier – i ski everything at Mt. Bachelor – and at my last ski clinic, i was the only person who could keep up with the instructor skiing off-piste. I ski the double black diamonds only with good conditions, though. i’m 68 years old. CAN YOU HELP ME DECIDE IF I SHOULD JUST order the 153 (which skied great for me) or go to the 158 (which i can’t demo)….
    THANKS!

  19. Hi Zack
I am considering buying the Great Joy skis to use for both groomed/off piste and some alpine touring. Can you let me know if you think they would be suitable for the touring bit? and if so are there are compatible touring skins? I am a woman, 5’7′ (171 cms) in bare feet, weight approx 147lbs, thanks Ruth

  20. Hi Ruth,
The Great Joy could be a great AT ski. It’s pretty lightweight due to the Graphene technology but still has the wood core for good response. A good binding for this would be the Marker Tour F10 or one of the tech fit bindings from Dynafit or G3.

I’d recommend the G3 Alpinist climbing skins. You’d either go for the 163cm or the 168cm depending on how aggressive you like to ski. So, the corresponding skins are 100mm Wide / 162-172cm Long (or the 115mm Wide / 162-172cm for more ski coverage). G3 also makes a women’s specific version of the Alpinist called the Elle which you could look at too. The only difference is the graphics.

  21. Hi Alex,
I would love to weigh that ski for you, but we no longer have any in inventory.

    Regards,
    Blake
